Presentation copy inscribed on front free endpaper of vol. l, " William H. Egan, Compliments of Nathianiel P. Langford, St. Paul, Dec. 5, 1900" Egan's pencilled ownership signature and St. Paul address on rear free endpaper of vol. l and ffe of vol. ll. The best single work on the disruptions to law and order in Montana in the 1860's, well-written and comprehensive, taking a larger, more historical view of the proceedings than Dimsdale's first hand account. Adams calls it "One of the standard works on the Montana vigilantes and the Plummer gang of road agents."
