The Merry Bachelor - History of Vanillo Gonzales -1892, Alain Rene Le Sage
1 Alain Rene Le Sage The Merry Bachelor - History of Vanillo Gonzales -1892
NY Worthington Company 1892 One Quarter Leather No Jacket Book R. De Los Rios
'Vanillo Gonzalez contains exact portraits of a variety of real characters, moral, political, and literary; a series of lively and pleasant adventures; and many keen but just censures upon the vices and follies of mankind ... Where is the folly of pedantry more humorously exposed, the compunctions of avarice more correctly depicted, or the pretensions of empiricism more happily ridiculed, that in the characters of the old Knight, the Licentiate Salablanca, Dr. Arriscador, and his Coadjutor Potoschi? Can the female mind be more seriously warned against the dangers of coquetry than by the fate of Donna Innes; or the career of youthful vanity be more instructively checked than by the story of Don Ramirez de Prado?' (Preface). In the general turn of character and business, this novel very strongly resembles Gil Blas; and too frequently throws the interest on the side of roguery, fraud, and debauch, to be very favourable to morality; but it is full of incident, and of entertaining adventures, and seems to be not ill translated.'. Approx. 5x7.5 inches, in good condition.

George Eliot - 'Romola' - Three Volumes In Half Leather Binding - 1863, George Eliot
10 George Eliot George Eliot - 'Romola' - Three Volumes In Half Leather Binding - 1863
London Smith, Elder and Co. 1863 Half-Leather Very Good No Jacket Book
1863, hardcover. One of George Eliot's most ambitious and imaginative novels, Romola is set in Renaissance Florence during the turbulent years following the expulsion of the powerful Medici family during which the zealous religious reformer Savonarola rose to control the city. At its heart is Romola, the devoted daughter of a blind scholar, married to the clever but ultimately treacherous Tito whose duplicity in both love and politics threatens to destroy everything she values, and she must break away to find her own path in life. Described by Eliot as 'written with my best blood', the story of Romola's intellectual and spiritual awakening is a compelling portrayal of a Utopian heroine, played out against a turbulent historical backdrop. [gd. rd.] Three volumes.Vol.1, first edition. Vols. 2 & 3 2nd edition. Light foxing at the pastedowns and the gutters, else bright and clean. The half-leather boards are tight and square and the leather is supple. Overall a very nice "three decker".

Rudyard Kipling - Plain Tales from the Hills - 1889, Rudyard Kipling
18 Rudyard Kipling Rudyard Kipling - Plain Tales from the Hills - 1889
Calcutta Thacker, Spink and Co. 1889 Hardcover Good No Jacket Book
1889, Published in Calcutta. This, a second edition copy of Rudyard Kipling's second book published the year before. "Plain Tales from the Hills" is Kipling's first volume of fiction. Most of the stories it includes had already appeared in the "Civil and Military Gazette; " they were written before he reached the age of 22; and they show a remarkably precocious literary talent. His vignettes of life in British India during the peak years of the empire give vivid insight into Anglo-India at work, at play, its military life, and into the 'character' of India itself. Approx. 5.5x7.5 inches, and in fair condition.
