2 Groucho MARX [inscribed] The Groucho Letters
NY Simon & Schuster 1967 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good Book Inscribed by Author(s)
A nice tight, bright, clean, and square copy in a dust jacket with some shallow edge tears. Presentable. Laid in, a photograph from 1967 of Groucho, the dedicatee, Al Kilgore, and an unknown man unwrapping a cigar. The letters are to and from comics, corporations, children, presidents, and even his daughter's boyfriend. Groucho swapping photos with T. S. Eliot ("I had no idea you were so handsome!"); advising his son on courting a rich dame ("Don't come out bluntly and say, 'How much dough have you got?' That wouldn't be the Marxian way"); crisply declining membership in a Hollywood club ("I don't care to belong to any social organization that will accept me as a member"); reacting with utmost composure when informed that he has been made into a verb by James Joyce ("There's no reason why I shouldn't appear in Finnegans Wake . I'm certainly as bewildered about life as Joyce was"); responding to a scandal sheet ("Gentleman: If you continue to publish slanderous pieces about me, I shall feel compelled to cancel my subscription"); describing himself to the Lunts ("I eat like a vulture. Unfortunately the resemblance doesn't end there"); and much, much more. That mobile visage, that look of wild amazement, and that weaving cigar are wholly captured, bound but untamed, in The Groucho Letters.[] Al Kilgore was an artist on the Bullwinkle comic strip & the Rocky and Bullwinkle comic books and related characters. Kilgore was also a bit part hollywood actor, and a director and producer of several projects. He was a founding member of the Laurel and Hardy appreciation society, The Sons of the Desert, and drew the organization's crest.

4 P. J. O'ROURKE [signed] All The Trouble In The World
NY Random House 1994 0394224248 / 9780394224244 1st Edition Hardcover Fine Fine Book 8vo - over 7 Signed by Author(s)
Attacking fashionable worries-- all those terrible problems that are constantly on our minds and in the news, but about which most of us have no real clue-- the bestselling author of Parliament of Whores crisscrosses the globe in search of answers to today's most vexing dilemmas. His subtitles to the chapters are excellent. Overpopulation: Just enough of me, way too much of you. He helps you realize it's not population density that's a problem, it's lack of freedom and rule of law. And people who claim to worry about overpopulation are really just disguising their racism. Famine: All guns, no butter. Somalia is the case study for how you can actually have a lot of food around and people will still starve due to political repression. It was so absurd it was sad. One of his colleagues said,"Men in skirts killing each other about matters of clan. People call it barbaric savagery, add bag pipes and a golf course, and they call it Scotland." Environment: The outdoors and how they got there. "Until very recently ordinary people spent most of their time outdoors-- farming, hunting, gathering nuts and berries, pillaging the countryside in armed bands. The more contact people actually have with nature, the less likely they are to "appreciate" it in a big mushy, ecumenical way. And the more likely they are to get chiggers." His description of the chiggers he got while visiting the rain forest is awesome. He stares into the face of disaster and points to the absurd human errors that causes them, and leaves the reader with some hope of a solution.
