Spiro Agnew was one of the most famous, most loved and most hated Americans of his time, and the story of his spectacular rise and fall is dramatic and exciting. His fame and notoriety blazed and burned itself out in a hot five year span from the summer of 1968 to the autumn of 1973. During those years, he was the kind of divisive figure that Sarah Palin has more recently been, though their conservative personae were completely different: he was dapper, surly and brainy where Palin is casual, cheery and outdoorsy. But like Sarah Palin he was always larger than life, and absolutely magnetic on TV. You couldn't take your eyes off him. Agnew was noted for his biting wit. The internet is replete with his quotes- -The criminal left belongs not in a dormitory, but in a penitentiary. The criminal left is not a problem to be solved by the Department of Philosophy or the Department of English, it is a problem for the Department of Justice. Black or white, the criminal left is interested in power. It is not interested in promoting the renewal and reforms that make democracy work; it is interested in promoting those collisions and conflict that tear democracy apart.- -An intellectual is a man who doesn't know how to park a bike.- -Perhaps the place to start looking for a credibility gap is not in the offices of the Government in Washington but in the studios of the networks in New York!- This "document" is in keeping with Agnew's sharp and pointed wit. State of Maryland Document with the official seal. Signed by " ....Spiro Agnew, Governor, to Arthur J. Sohmer, Greeting: Be it Known; that on behalf of the citizens of this State, in recognition of his fawning and groveling we are pleased to confer upon you this Certificate of Distinguished Sycophant. given ....this 28th day of Sept. ....... 1967..........." 14" x11" near fine condition.
