The photographer's first book, a collection of her photographic portraits of American jazz musicians, with text by Gary Giddins. Jazz musicians are most often pictured in mid-solo, tense, eyes closed, seemingly trying to force their whole personalities into their instruments. But Friedman, a New York-based portrait and fashion photographer, has captured some surprisingly relaxed, human images in this book's 65 pictures. They range from bizarre, almost parody pinup shots of a shirtless, hirsute Stan Getz and a tattoo-covered Art Pepper, to playful poses by Tony Bennett and Eubie Blake. The most arresting photographs show musicians in groups. The responses of jazz artists to each other are almost as fascinating personally as they are musically, and Friedman reflects some of that mixture of individuality and camaraderie in such shots as one of the two pianists Tommy Flanagan and Barry Harris, others of the Jones brothers, Hank, Elvin and Thad, and of Count Basie and Quincy Jones. Brief biographies by jazz critic Gary Giddins are incidental: it's the spirit of the photographs that makes this an enjoyable book.
