Extra illustrated "....Even dogs and cats are protected by societies for prevention of animal cruelty... but the donkey seems to be fighting this survival-battle virtually alone. He deserves a lawyer. To prepare the case for the petitioners......we traversed the historical donkey trails through numerous libraries and newspaper offices throughout the western U.S.; the Dept. of Agriculture; the National Park Service; Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian----marshalling the 6000 years of written testimony of many witnesses on behalf of this little animal, back to his origin in the African Nubian Desert." Superior Court Judge William G. Long states his "purpose in writing 'Asses vs. Jackasses' is to inculcate in the minds of men a little more understanding, sympathy, respect, and kindliness for one of the least appreciated and most misunderstood animals on on this earth." Chapters incl. "How and Why Did the donkey become a Donkey?", "Mules", "The Ass and Religion", "The Donkey in Politics", "Burro Destiny", "Burro Lore and Yarns", "Man Still Needs the Burro"-- comparing the record of the donkey with Homo Sapien, also known as "jackass." The judge concludes that "human beings have an infinite capacity for making jackasses of themselves." Retired Judge Long culminated a legal career of some 50 years by writing his 'Jackass' book. He dedicated the 133-pg volume to Elmer G. Sill, the founder of Harmony Lodge in Cascade Mts., Oregon. The building of Harmony lodge was begun in the Great Depression and dedicated in 1938. This extra-illustrated copy is E.G Sills' own copy and he packed it with his captioned 1940s b&w photos of gentlemen at Harmony Lodge and photos of the lodge's own jackass-- named Cleopatra! Laid-in is an original birth announcement for Caesar, donkey son of Cleopatra & Mark Antony; and a funeral announcement, dated Dec 7th,1948, of Cleopatra's passing. E.G. Sills' typed remembrances of the origins of Harmony Lodge and its' beloved Cleopatra is tipped-in at the end together with a fold-out map of Harmony Lodge. Drawings by Mary Ann Carruthers Akin s
