This 1st edition is impossibly scarce. From 1889 to 1893, The Rev. Henry C. McCook published his, American Spiders and Their Spinningwork: A Natural History of the Orbweaving Spiders of the United States with Special Regard to Their Industry and Habits. This three volume production was produced under the auspices of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (where McCook was vice-president). McCook's magnum opus primarily covers the orb-weaving spiders however there is plenty of material on jumping spiders, wandering spiders, trapdoor spiders, and other species. This is one of the most thorough examinations of the natural history of American spiders, but due to its scarcity (only a limited number of volumes were originally printed), it is not well known by spider enthusiasts today. A total of only 250 sets were printed by the author, 150 of which were this signed & numbered "Author's Edition". These original author's edition volumes I & II are both dampstained at the top leading corners intruding on the text randomly. The text blocks are still tightly bound but exhibit some closed tears, splits or folds here and there. The fragile patterned endpapers have separated from the boards, but are repaired. Volume 3 is pristine facsimile edition and is provided here to complete the set.
